Sun City West will play host to a national racquetball tournament next month featuring players aged 80 and older.
The Men of October Racquetball Tournament, sponsored by the National Masters Racquetball Association, Gearbox Racquetball and Wilson, will take place Oct. 21 and 22 at the Sun City West Racquetball Courts, located in the R.H. Johnson Racquet Sports Center, 19803 R.H. Johnson Blvd. The event is sanctioned by the United States Racquetball Association. Games begin at 8 a.m., and the public is invited to attend free as spectators to support these energetic 80-year-olds!
?One of our club members, Greg Steger, wanted to pay tribute, to honor those athletes who are over 80 and still want to play a sport like this, because it is pretty grueling,? said Jan Warren, president of the Sun City West Racquetball/Handball Club.
?I feel the men?s good health, agility and desire to compete at this age is a result of dedication and addiction to the sport of racquetball,? said Steger, the tournament chairman. ?For me at age 62, I?m inspired and in awe of these men. I want the Phoenix Metro area and the whole state of Arizona to see what the Sun City West community is all about!?
About 20 players are expected to participate. Confirmations so far include players from Kansas, Colorado, South Carolina, Arizona and California. Sun City West?s own Hal Federman, Joe Fjelstad, Kenneth Hutton, Cliff Philpott and Lake Westphal will be participating.
?We had one man from Canada who wanted to participate, but he was only 79, so we told him next year if we do it again, he can play then,? said Warren.
The tournament will conclude with an awards dinner on Oct. 22, with the winners receiving beautiful, hand-crafted trophies created by the Sun City West Stained Glass Club, and everyone enjoying a delicious feast.
?These players are at the courts at 7 a.m. three to five days a week, and they play 1 ? to 2 hours,? Steger said of the Sun City West competitors. ?They don?t just show up ? they are competitive and play to win. And they are playing against other players in the age range of 55 to 79. The reason for this Men of October tourney is to showcase our octogenarians who are active, athletic, energetic and young in mind and soul.?
