Egypt leader slams Syrian regime during Iran visit

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? In a clear rebuke to Syria's key ally Iran, Egypt's new president said Thursday that Bashar Assad's "oppressive" regime has lost its legitimacy and told an international conference in Tehran that the world must stand behind the Syrian rebels.

The rallying call by Mohammed Morsi ? making the first visit to Iran by an Egyptian leader since the 1979 Islamic Revolution ? showed the huge divide between Iran's stalwart support of Assad and the growing network of regional powers pushing for his downfall.

It also drove home the difficulties for Iran as host of a gathering of the 120-nation Nonaligned Movement, a Cold War-era group that Tehran seeks to transform into a powerful bloc to challenge Western influence.

Iran's leaders say the weeklong meeting, which wraps up Friday, displays the inability of the West's attempt to isolate the country over its nuclear program. But Iran has been forced to endure stinging criticism from its most high-level participant as U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon cited concerns about Iran's human rights record and said Iran's condemnations of Israel were unacceptable.

Morsi's address to the gathering further pushed Iran into a corner. In effect, he demanded Iran join the growing anti-Assad consensus or risk being further estranged from Egypt and other regional heavyweights such as Turkey and Saudi Arabia.

Morsi has proposed that Iran take part in a four-nation contact group that would include Egypt, Turkey and Saudi Arabia to mediate an end to the Syrian crisis. The U.N. chief Ban also said Iran has a key role to play in finding a solution to end Syria's civil war, which activists say has claimed at least 20,000 lives.

But Iran has given no signals of breaking ties with Assad, and the Syrian rebels fighting the regime say they reject Iran's participation in any peace efforts.

"The bloodshed in Syria is the responsibility of all of us and will not stop until there is real intervention to stop it," Morsi said. "The Syrian crisis is bleeding our hearts."

Syrian delegates to the conference walked out during Morsi's speech.

"Morsi's comments violated the traditions of the summit and are considered interference in Syrian internal affairs," Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem, who was heading the Syrian delegation.

He also accused Morsi of "instigating bloodshed in Syria," according to quotes reported by the state-owned Al-Ikhbariya TV. He didn't elaborate.

In another possible dig at Iran, Morsi gave credit to the Arab Spring wave of uprisings that put him in power and touched off the civil war in Syria. Iran has endorsed many of the revolts ? describing them as a modern-day reflection of its Islamic Revolution more than three decades ago ? but denounces the Syrian uprising as orchestrated by "enemies" that include Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

At the United Nations, Turkey's Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu is expected to urge the Security Council later Thursday to set up a safe zone in Syria to protect thousands of civilians fleeing the civil war. But the initiative is almost certain to meet resistance from Council members such as Russia, which has supported the Assad dynasty for decades.

Morsi's Sunni Muslim Brotherhood backers, Egypt's most powerful political group since the revolt, are opposed to Shiite Iran's staunch backing of the Syrian regime and its lethal crackdown on largely Sunni protesters. Assad is a follower of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

"We should all express our full support to the struggle of those who are demanding freedom and justice in Syria and translate our sympathies into a clear political vision that supports peaceful transfer (of power) to a democratic system," Morsi said in his opening statement.

Morsi slammed Assad's rule, saying that the world had a "moral duty" to stand with the Syrian people in their struggle "against an oppressive regime that has lost its legitimacy."

He said having a democratic system in Syria "reflects the desire of the Syrian people for freedom, justice and equality and at the same time protects Syria from entering into a civil war or being divided by sectarian clashes."

Morsi also called for uniting the fractured Syrian opposition, which has not been able to agree on a clear transitional roadmap for governing the country if Assad should fall. The Egyptian president expressed Cairo's readiness to work with all parties to stop the bloodshed and "agree on a clear vision on which the new free Syria will be based."

He has, in the past, spoken out against international military intervention in Syria.

Egyptian officials had said they did not expect top-level bilateral meetings with their Iranian counterparts during Morsi's visit. However, semiofficial ISNA news agency said Morsi and President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad met later.

Morsi's visit represents a major step toward ending decades of friction between the two countries despite the still-cool rapport.

Tehran cut ties with Egypt following Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution. Under Morsi's predecessor who was ousted, Hosni Mubarak, Egypt sided with Saudi Arabia and other Sunni-dominated Arab states in trying to isolate Shiite-led Iran.

In an attempt at outreach with Iran, Morsi stressed that it is the right of countries to develop nuclear energy for peaceful as long as it adheres to international protocols. The West fears Iran's uranium enrichment could lead to atomic weapons, but Iran has insisted that it only seeks reactors for energy and medical purposes.

The U.N. chief called Iran's nuclear program "top concern" of international community and urged Tehran's "full cooperation" with the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency, which seeks greater access to Iranian sites for inspections.

He also urged all parties ? apparently including Israel ? to "stop provocative and inflammatory threats; a war of words can quickly spiral into war of violence."

But he added specific censure for Iranian condemnations of Israel. Earlier this month, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Israel will "disappear from the scene of geography." In his speech Thursday, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called Israel a "fake regime."

"I strongly reject threats by any member states to destroy another or outrageous attempt to deny historical facts such as the Holocaust, claiming that another state, Israel, does not have the right to exist or describing it in racist terms," Ban said.

Earlier, Khamenei repeated his claims that Iran has never pursued nuclear weapons ? calling use of atomic arms a "big and unforgivable sin" ? but also noted it will never give up its work on nuclear technology.

"I declare that the Islamic Republic of Iran has never been after nuclear weapons and it never will abandon its right for peaceful use of nuclear energy" he told the gathering.

Cruise Travel Insurance: So Your Desire Travel Is Insured ...

After careful planning and cost-cutting over 10 long decades, Donna and Keith finally was able to save up enough money to book their sail day at Galapagos. It had been to be their second honeymoon amidst the scenic destinations. Just as their expectation about the trip was about to reach its peak, they got the unfortunate news of Keith?s mother being identified as having a critical illness that offered her hardly any times to live. The news was double-disaster?not only were they excessively saddened by the probability of losing his mother to a severe illness, but they also found that their cruise booking, like other cruise reservations, was completely non-refundable: a large amount of these saving was destined to be lost when they cancelled the trip. Keith bitterly regretted perhaps not taking his wife?s advice on purchasing cruise travel insurance. You may use cruise travel insurance plans to reimburse trip costs in the event that you cancel the trip before it starts. If among the tourists is ill or injured and the journey needs to be forgotten midway, you retrieve your money through cruise travel insurance. Some benefits that are part of this plan include compensation of medical costs and evacuation of sick or wounded travelers. There are several types of sail insurance plans and they essentially differ in the factors they consider good for journey cancellation and the people covered by the plan. In certain cases, they cover only the travelers and in other cases, travelers as well as members of the family are covered.Plans that provide evacuation cover may pay for evacuation only to fixed local hospitals, or they may permit for evacuation to a clinic of the insured person?s alternative, of their home state. It could be possible to acquire a medical upgrade for the plan so that it covers medical costs as well.If you are interested in adventure activities and are about to engage in some of them, then do confirm whether the sail insurance plan you want to purchase covers the actions you are interested in. Some policies include experience activities like scuba and jet skiing and some do not.The strategies may or may maybe not insure against pre-existing problems or economic insolvency of the travel supplier. In the cases where economic insolvency is included, the suitable approach purchase day may vary so that some plans would drive back the insolvency just if purchased within 21 days from the original trip deposit, while others would address it even if purchased within a day of the last trip payment. If your trip is postponed as a result of bad weather, you then do not need to fear. Most cruise insurance strategies list bad weather as a disorder under which cancellation fees are covered. Nevertheless, if your vacation endures because of terrorism, then it?s unlikely that the master plan will consider it. Medical expenses were however, covered by some plans, ranging from $10,000 to $500,000, while evacuation and repatriation cover may range from $100,000 to $1 million.

Coral scientists use new model to find where corals are most likely to survive climate change

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? Marine conservationists from the Wildlife Conservation Society working with other coral reef experts have identified heat-tolerant coral species living in locations with continuous background temperature variability as those having the best chance of surviving climate change, according to a new simplified method for measuring coral reef resilience.

Therefore, coral reefs with these characteristics should receive immediate attention for conserving this highly threatened ecosystem, according to the authors of a study appearing August 30 in the online journal PLoS ONE.

The bewildering diversity of coral reef environments has made assessing and prioritizing them costly, and yet they require immediate action to respond to the threats of climate change. Combining expert opinion and scientific evidence, the scientists developed a simplified assessment that reduces this complexity to 11 key and easily measured factors. This finding greatly simplifies and reduces the time needed for assessments and, therefore, gives coral reef managers a cost-effective, evidence-based tool for gauging a reef's chances of survival.

"Coral reefs are astoundingly complex systems," said Dr. Tim McClanahan, lead author of the study and head of WCS's coral reef research and conservation program. "This reality sometimes leads to the assumption that evaluations and management strategies must also be complex. Our study reveals, however, that effective conservation decisions may hinge on a few easily measurable factors, and this can promote faster management actions."

The study streamlines a previous approach to measuring the resilience of coral reefs by squaring a currently used assessment models with expert opinions and existing data sets. Focusing on a comprehensive field study undertaken by WCS in Karimunjawa Marine Park, located on the coast of Java in Indonesia, McClanahan and his co-authors examined a previously employed complex and expensive assessment protocol that included over 60 factors -- herbivorous fish diversity, bio-erosion rates, hard coral cover, and many others -- in order to determine which factors were most important.

Using a filtering methodology using surveys and scientific literature, the research team winnowed the list to 11 easily measured factors. Among these, the most important factors favoring resilience are heat-resistant coral species and background temperature variability.

The researchers than used the data collected in the previous comprehensive survey of Karimunjawa Marine Park and reassessed it with the new model. The priorities reached were not the same as the first assessment, which suggested that largely unimportant factors biased the selection of sites in the first assessment while increasing the costs of the investigation.

While the new model offers a potentially valuable, cost-effective tool in ranking the resilience of coral reef systems, McClanahan said that further research is needed to evaluate the priority and types of heat-resistant corals and temperature variability needed for conservation planning. He added that one of the more exciting outputs was that the study prioritized future investigations by identifying factors that are least agreed on among scientists and that have the highest potential to promote the resilience of coral reefs.

"This method gives us a foundation for what could become an indispensible assessment tool for identifying conservation priorities," added McClanahan. "We suspect this protocol will drive investigations for the next decade."

Kurtzman and Orci Producing Dragonology

dragonology-alex-kurtzman-roberto-orci-slice

The ever-busy Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci have added yet another project to their development slate.? Heat Vision reports that Kurtzman and Orci have signed on to produce an adaptation of the fantasy adventure book series Dragonology.? Instead of reading like novels, the books are presented as long-lost works written by Dr. Ernest Drake in the 19th century.? The central concept of the film is that dragons actually exist, and a team of dragonologists ?embark on the quest to avert a plot to use the world?s remaining dragons to wipe out humanity.? ?Leonard Hartman wrote the initial draft of the script, but he?s now been moved to an executive producer role as Kurtzman and Orci look for a new writer to tackle the adaptation.

Following the initial book, subsequent entries in the Dragonology?series centered on the anatomy of certain dragons, how to summon dragons, and learning the secrets of dragons.? Kurtzman and Orci recently signed a deal with Universal to develop and produce reboots of Van Helsing and The Mummy, and they?re also writing and producing the Amazing Spider-Man sequel.? Hit the jump to read a synopsis for Dragonology.

dragonology-book-coverHere?s a synopsis for Dragonology:

For true believers only, a lavishly illustrated reproduction of a legendary volume by the world?s most distinguished dragonologist. Don?t let it fall into the wrong hands!

Do you believe in dragons? Now, for the first time, the long-lost research of renowned nineteenth century dragonologist Dr. Ernest Drake is presented in all its eccentric glory, happily bridging the gap between dragon legend and fact. The meticulous Dr. Drake assigns Latin names to various dragon species, ruminates on why dragons are able to speak, speculates on how they could fly, and explains the true purpose of their notorious hoarding habits. Here are just a few of DRAGONOLOGY?S fascinating features:

? Novelty item on every spread, including tactile samples of dragon wings, dragon scales, and dragon skin
? Booklet of dragon riddles (indispensable to the burgeoning dragonologist)
? Sealed envelope containing a powerful dragon-calling spell
? Embossed faux leather cover with silver foil, encrusted with three dragon gems

In his afterword, Dr. Drake reveals that one of the crucial goals of dragonologists is to preserve the magnificent creatures of their study wherever possible ? a goal this tongue-in-cheek volume most affectionately achieves. An incomparable gift for secret dragonologists everywhere! [Amazon]

Sanctions block Iran gamers from World of Warcraft

LONDON (AP) ? They've vanquished elves, trolls, and all manner of magical monsters. But one select group of online gamers is facing an even more formidable foe: The U.S. sanctions regime.

Iranian players of "World of Warcraft," the massively popular online multiplayer franchise, have found themselves frozen out by Blizzard Activision Inc., the American company behind the game. Iranian role playing enthusiasts have spent much of the past week peppering Blizzard's message board with complaints about how they weren't able to log on to the service ? only to be told recently that U.S. law was to blame.

"United States trade restrictions and economic sanction laws prohibit Blizzard from doing business with residents of certain nations, including Iran," the company said in an email sent to players last week and forwarded to The Associated Press late Tuesday. "Blizzard tightened up its procedures to ensure compliance with these laws, and players connecting from the affected nations are restricted from access to Blizzard games and services."

A post to Blizzard's message board by a company employee also noted that rules meant Iranian players would not be getting refunds.

Blizzard's "Warcraft" franchise dates back to 1994 and has grown into a sprawling virtual world complete with its own online economy and a thriving subculture. The games' more than 9 million subscribers can log on to assume the identity of a dizzying array of fantastical characters and fight together ? or each other ? for experience, magical weapons, and loot.

It wasn't clear precisely how many players were affected by the block. Blizzard's public relations director, Rob Hilburger, said that the company doesn't break player data out by country or region for competitive reasons. But he said the Iranian market compromised only "a tiny fraction" of the company's subscribers worldwide.

Hilburger didn't immediately respond to a question asking why the company had only recently blocked Iranian players from its service.

The United States and its allies have been steadily increasing economic pressure on Iran as it tries to convince the Islamic republic to open up about its disputed nuclear program, which Western governments fear is a cover for the development of atomic weapons. Tehran insists the program is intended for civilian energy generation.

?A Tear for Mother? ? Conservative Christian Bible Study Materials

By?P.J. Casebolt

?And Adam called his wife?s name Eve; because she was the mother of all living? (Gen. 3:20). By a special act of creation, God created woman, mothers, and motherhood. I would like to wield the pen and strike a blow for motherhood at least one more time before the term becomes completely meaningless, or even extinct. Mothers are already an endangered species in our modern society, and if some continue to have their way with respect to abortion and the deterioration of family values, the extinction of motherhood may become more fact than fable.

All are agreed that many of our social and moral problems are a direct result of deterioration in the home. Yet, not enough are willing to do anything about the problem. According to the latest statistics, well over half of all mothers work outside the home. And, the time and emphasis spent on being a mother suffers accordingly. Again, if some feminists and like-minded ?liberators? of womanhood and motherhood have their way, all mothers will be out of the home and the children left over from the effects of abortion will all be turned over to surrogate day-care centers which will be partially or completely supported by taxes. Even those of us who are trying to salvage the institution of motherhood will be forced to support those practices which are destroying the very thing we are striving to save.

As in most matters, there are exceptions to the general rule. We recognize situations which are affected by widowhood, shiftless fathers and husbands, childless couples, or even homes where the children are grown and gone. But the exception is supposed to prove the rule, not become the rule.

A lot of emphasis is being made on the matter of ?pro-choice? and a woman?s right to fulfill her own ambitions. Should not at least equal rights be accorded those women who choose to remain in the home and make motherhood their number one priority in life? These latter are fast becoming the minority, and are beginning to be regarded as second-class women. I believe that we should take the time in our speech, and space in our writing, to commend every woman who wants to devote all of her time to being a woman, a wife, and a mother.

The Bible is filled with examples of ?mothers of Israel? who emulate and exonerate the institution of motherhood. One mother?s love for her child was so strong that she was willing to let an impostor have her child rather than see the child put to death (1 Kings 3:26, 27). But, another mother encouraged her daughter to dance before a king and to have John the Baptist?s head cut off (Matt. 14:3-11). We have all seen children creating havoc in stores, church buildings, and other public places while their mothers were either nowhere to be seen or were totally oblivious to the actions or safety of their own offspring. News headlines and police blotters are filled with accounts of child neglect, and even abuse and murder. But I noticed something last summer that reaffirmed my faith in mothers and motherhood.

Several mothers were together while their offspring played nearby. It was difficult to tell which offspring be- longed to which mother, but all of the mothers seemed to be keeping an eye out for the little ones. If a problem seemed to be developing, one of the mothers would go check it out. If some bully began to mistreat his or her playmates, a mother would discipline the rebel. On one occasion, the father intervened in a squabble, and sent one of the big bullies sailing with its tail tucked between its legs. I mean, literally. You see, I live in the country, and a herd of cows and calves graze, feed, sleep, and play in the field by our house. And as J.D. Tant used to say, ?Before God,? these cows acted more like mothers than do some mothers of the human race. I noticed that some mothers saw to it that their calves were fed and cared for even before the mother?s own personal ambitions were satisfied. My heart took hope. If all else fails, maybe we can turn to the beasts of the field and the fowl of the air for some basic lessons in mother- hood. Once we learn the basics, we can begin reading our Bibles instead of reading after psychologists intoxicated with human wisdom, and listen to the Lord instead of some self-styled liberator who only wants to bring the women and children of our country into bondage of the flesh.

I wrote the following poem in 1988 when I was in a meeting at Monticello, Florida. The sister in whose home we were staying received a telephone message one day that her mother had died. I noticed tears in her eyes when she hung up the phone. I can?t stop tears for mothers, but maybe I can help fellow pilgrims see through them more clearly.

A Tear for Mother

There are, it seems, so many kinds of tears

Those born of pain, of sadness, and tears of joy as well;

Some kind will follow us all through our years

But we?ll grow wiser since that first, lone teardrop fell.

?

We have a different feeling in our heart

For father, sister, brother, children, loved ones all;

It?s there when first we meet and when we part,

Renewed by mem?ries, songs, by pictures on the wall.

?

For mothers, too, we have a special love

Because the love they give is special, diff?rent still;

It?s gentle like the call of mourning dove,

And melancholy like the woodland whip-poor-will.

?

So, mothers, be a mother while you may,

For no one else can fill your place, Be so dear;

And when it comes your time to go away,

Somewhere there?ll drop for you a special tear.

Police blotter: Chad Mendes charged, former Jackson?s fighter arrested

Police-related news in MMA to report:

-- UFC featherweight Chad Mendes was charged with simple battery for his role in a bar fight in Hanford, Calif. He is cooperating with the police, denies he was involved, and will be arraigned on Sept. 19. Mendes' last fight was a 31-second knockout of Cody McKenzie at UFC 148.

HBT: Teixeira leaves Yanks' game, has MRI on calf

UPDATE: No word yet on the MRI results, but Yankees manager Joe Girardi told Jack Curry of YES Network that Teixeira is unlikely to play in at least the next five games.

9:10 PM: Mark Teixeira?s left wrist has been a nagging issue for the past month, but now he has another injury to deal with.

Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports that Teixeira exited tonight?s game against the Blue Jays after four innings with a left calf strain and was sent to New York-Presbyterian Hospital to undergo an MRI.

Teixeira appeared to tweak something during his at-bat in the fourth inning. He finished the at-bat and eventually drew a walk, but limped around the bases when he scored on an RBI single by Russell Martin. Eric Chavez replaced him at first base to begin the fifth inning while Jayson Nix entered the game to play third.

Teixeira is hitting .255/.355/.478 with 23 home runs, 81 RBI and an .813 OPS in 119 games this season. The Yankees could shuffle through a number of options at first base if he requires an extended absence, including Nick Swisher, Eric Chavez, Casey McGehee and the newly-acquired Steve Pearce.

Pakistani prime minister buys time in Supreme Court conflict

Pakistani Prime Minister Ashraf could face removal from office if he doesn't resolve the deadlock between the Supreme Court and the government.

Pakistan's Supreme Court has given Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf three weeks to resolve a standoff between the judiciary and the government and reopen corruption cases against President Asif Ali Zardari.

The current government has already lost one prime minister. Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani was ousted in June for refusing to write a letter to Swiss authorities, effectively reopening the corruption case. Newly appointed Prime Minister Ashraf was asked to do the same thing, but refused as well. If he does not comply with the courts, the country risks losing yet another prime minister.

The delay in any ruling on the matter adds three weeks to the issue that has already lasted more than two and half years. And analysts say it is eroding the legitimacy of the independent Supreme Court, something Pakistan prides itself on, and is threatening rule of law.

?People are getting sick and tired of this deadlock. There is rule of law on one side, and the government on the other. This case is becoming an unwanted guest in the minds of everyone,? says Fahd Husain, a noted columnist and a news show host.

The motive behind the court's decisions to push for the reopening of the conviction case has divided observers. Some accuse the court of deliberately undermining the democratically elected Pakistan People's Party (PPP). Others say that the court is following through on its constitutional responsibility. Most, however, think the tussle indicates personal vendettas rather than principled stances.

The case against Mr. Zardari dates back to the 1990s, when he was accused of taking kickbacks for government contracts, but his party, the ruling PPP, maintains that the cases were politically motivated.

In 2007, a deal between former President Perrez Musharraf and the wife of Zardari, Benazir Bhutto, reportedly led to the dropping of all accusations in a presidential ordinance. But the law was repealed by the judiciary in December 2009, and the cases were reopened.

Battle of egos

Mehreen Zahra Malik, editor and columnist at The News, a daily English paper, says that people are starting to see this as just a battle of egos now.

?With such [little] time left for the government to complete its tenure, why cannot the judiciary just wait for the people to vote this government out?? Ms. Malik says.

But she says that the judiciary sees this deadlock differently.

?The court thinks that if it can make the most powerful man, the president of the country, bend to law, Pakistan will establish itself as a country where rule of law prevails. But this top-to-bottom approach is weakening rule of law, because there are so many other issues, like energy crisis, militancy, etc., in Pakistan that need to be addressed which affect common people, and they are being ignored, leading to public disillusionment,? Malik says.

On the other hand, legal experts feel that the decision to give more time to Ashraf was a reasonable one. ?The judiciary had boxed itself in a corner,? says Feisal Naqvi, a lawyer at the Supreme Court, who regularly writes for different newspapers. ?The court has to have a spotless reputation, which it does not anymore.?

Mr. Naqvi says that the current deadlock between the two institutions in the country has been skillfully played to the advantage of the government.

If another prime minister is sent home, it could help the PPP-led government in the coming elections. ?If the judiciary regularly keeps dismissing prime ministers, it can lose some of its own legitimacy,? he says.

?In any situation when two entities are fighting with each other, everyone thinks both are to be blamed for the clash and that is what is happening now,? Naqvi adds.

Fresh elections?

General elections are scheduled for February, when the current government?s tenure ends.

But Mr. Husain says by giving more time to the prime minister today, the Supreme Court is looking for some sign from the government for early elections.

?The court is not going to give up on the letter but has given up on this government to write the letter. In the coming days, if we do not see any headway toward a consensus being built on a caretaker government by political parties, this prime minister may just have to go home, too,? Husain warns.

Tech Comparison: Dark Souls PC | N4G

Oh dude that was a low blow. Not good not good

I respect From Software and many other smaller devs for what they are trying to do.

Even though the game is not playing well at all on the PC and has control issues and performance issues and hard to figure out menu and interface and such, but under all that a solid game is trying really hard to come through.

I personally will not agree with the price tag for a jittery experience but it does seem like a decent game underneath.

An Ohio nurse accidentally put a kidney in the trash, prompting the University of Toledo Medical Center to suspend its live donor program as it investigates the incident.

Doctors tried to resuscitate the kidney, which came from a live donor, but it was rendered unusable.

?We cannot fathom the disappointment that those impacted have experienced over the course of the last week. The University cannot begin to express the sorrow that we feel that this unfortunate incident occurred. We apologize sincerely,? Dr. Jeffery P. Gold, University of Toledo chancellor and dean of the College of Medicine, said in a statement.

The? hospital has voluntarily suspended its live kidney donor program and has placed two nurses on paid administrative leave while it investigates the incident.

?[We are] in the process of assessing how this situation occurred and we are committed to ensuring safeguards are put in place to prevent such an incident from ever happening again,? Gold said, adding that the hospital was getting help from experts inside and outside the institution.

The University of Toledo Medical Center has performed more than 1,700 renal transplants since it began in 1972, with a 98 percent success rate, according to the hospital.

A spokesperson said the transplant program is expected to reopen in the next few weeks.

(AP Photo/Matt Rourke, File)

(AP) ? The young man whose 2009 allegations of sexual abuse led to the Penn State scandal and criminal convictions of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky is asking a court to find the university also at fault.

A lawsuit, filed Friday by the person known as Victim 1 at Sandusky's trial, said university officials made deliberate decisions not to report Sandusky to authorities.

It described their actions as "a function of (Penn State's) purposeful, deliberate and shameful subordination of the safety of children to its economic self-interests, and to its interest in maintaining and perpetuating its reputation."

The complaint was filed electronically in Philadelphia state court, Slade McLaughlin, a lawyer for Victim 1, told The Associated Press. The suit names no other defendants than the State College university.

Sandusky was convicted in June of 45 criminal counts for sexual abuse of 10 boys, both on and off campus. At 68, he awaits sentencing that will likely send him to prison for the rest of his life.

Victim 1 and his mother reported Sandusky to the boy's high school and the Clinton County child protective agency in November 2009. Their complaint triggered the state investigation that last year resulted in the criminal charges against Sandusky and two university officials.

Former Penn State administrator Gary Schultz and athletic director Tim Curley, who is on leave, were charged with perjury and failure to report suspected child abuse. Both deny the allegations and are expected to go on trial in January.

Famed football coach Joe Paterno was fired. He died last January.

In the lawsuit, Victim 1 is known as "John Doe C." The suit draws heavily from court testimony, grand jury investigations and Penn State's own investigative report, conducted by former FBI director Louis Freeh. The report details how university officials handled the claims against Sandusky and Sandusky's behavior.

University spokesman Dave La Torre said the school has no comment on the pending litigation.

"The university takes these cases very seriously," La Torre said adding that the current president and board "have publicly emphasized that their goal is to find solutions that rest on the principle of justice for the victims."

The suit claimed that a "special relationship" between Penn State and The Second Mile, a Sandusky-founded charity for youth, gave Sandusky a respectable public image and connections that enabled him to perform criminal acts.

It alleged "(Penn State) believed its reputation and economic interests would be adversely impacted if the public learned that a man closely associated with the school's football program was, in fact, a pedophile."

The Second Mile's future remains uncertain, subject to a legal dispute.

According to the lawsuit, Victim 1 met Sandusky about eight years ago, when the boy was 11 and a first-year participant in a camp sponsored by The Second Mile. In his second year, the boy drew Sandusky's attention and accepted invitations to spend nights at the coach's State College home and to attend professional sports events, the suit said.

Over a three-year period ending in 2008, the suit said, Sandusky assaulted the boy more than 100 times, including fondling and oral sex. The lawsuit claims Sandusky attacked "numerous victims over a span of 30 years," but noted that his criminal trial was limited to a 15-year period and 10 victims.

Following Victim 1's testimony, Sandusky was convicted of all six counts that related to him, including involuntary deviate sexual intercourse for instances of oral sex.

The suit alleged negligence, fraudulent concealment, intentional infliction of emotional distress and civil conspiracy. It said Victim 1 has suffered physical and emotional injuries and will likely need medical and psychological help well into his future. The suit seeks compensatory and punitive damages.

Another Sandusky accuser has filed a federal lawsuit related to the scandal and a second victim has filed a court notice that he will file complaint. Lawyers have suggested others may take legal action.

Mysterious Origins of Brightest Star Explosions Revealed

The most powerful exploding stars in the universe are still cloaked in mystery, but some are now yielding the secrets of their origins, scientists say.

Research is also shedding light on gamma-ray bursts, the most powerful explosions in the universe, up to a million times brighter than a supernova, scientists added.

The most powerful star explosions are supernovas, which are bright enough to briefly outshine all the stars in their galaxies. There are two known ways supernovas occur ? a Type Ia supernova arises when one star piles fuel onto a dying star known as a white dwarf, and a Type II supernova happens when the core of a massive star runs out of fuel, collapses to an extraordinarily dense nugget in a fraction of a second and then bounces and blasts its material outward.

In the past 12 years, scientists have detected a new class of supernovas, ones about two to 100 times brighter than all the others. These so-called super-luminous supernovas apparently come in three different flavors, only one of which is well-understood. [Amazing Supernova Photos]

The rarest but seemingly best-understood of these super-luminous, or super-bright, supernovas are the radioactively powered SLSN-R. These supernovas seem to arise from the collapses of stellar cores, and apparently also each involve huge amounts of a radioactive isotope of nickel in those dying stars, enough to equal several times the mass of the sun. As this radioactive material decays, it releases energy in the form of gamma rays and antimatter that makes the expanding material from the supernova glow.

The way this radioactive nickel is created remains hotly debated. One possibility is that it gets forged during the collapse of stellar cores; the other is that it is created in nuclear reactions involving oxygen in very massive stars, said study lead author Avishay Gal-Yam, an astrophysicist at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel.

Probably the most observed type of super-luminous supernova is the hydrogen-rich SLSN-II. They apparently typically emerge from stars that possess thick hydrogen envelopes, which veil their light and make it difficult to say what causes these explosions. They may get the boost in brightness from a number of culprits, such as newly formed black holes, which rapidly suck matter into themselves, or magnetars, which are rapidly spinning neutron stars with powerful magnetic fields ? either of these possibilities might disrupt the hydrogen tremendously, with luminous effects.

"SLSN-II are technically Type II supernovae, but are unlikely to be the same as common Type II supernovae that come from exploding red supergiant stars," Gal-Yam said. "The properties of SLSN-II cannot be matched by any red supergiant we know ? they must have different progenitors."

The hydrogen-poor SLSN-I are the most luminous of all known supernovas. Although these supernovas are not surrounded by massive, opaque hydrogen envelopes, their origins remain deeply uncertain.

"They are indeed mysterious," Gal-Yam said.

One possibility is that they are hydrogen-poor stars that had inflated to very large diameters, dozens of times larger than our sun's. When they went supernova, they would radiate brightly and for a long time, but not be surrounded by much of a hydrogen envelope.

"The other option people have looked into is to have a more normal hydrogen-poor star which is only a few times larger than the sun ? such stars are known in our galaxy and called Wolf-Rayet stars ? and then pump it up with magnetic energy drained from an object called a magnetar, which is a rapidly rotating and highly magnetized neutron star, that was formed in the core of this Wolf-Rayet star when its core collapsed," Gal-Yam said. "The mystery here is that while we know that magnetars exist ? we see them in our galaxy ? it is not clear they rotate rapidly enough when they are born inside stars to power up such super-supernovae."

Investigating super-luminous supernovas can help better understand how heavy elements were created, "especially in the early universe," Gal-Yam told SPACE.com. In addition, "they are very bright and can serve as beacons, illuminating faint and obscure tiny dwarf galaxies at high redshifts ? very far away, so the light was emitted a long time ago ? allowing us to study [smyers1]?the very early universe."

Gal-Yam detailed this research on super-luminous supernovas in a paper appearing in the Aug. 24 issue of the journal Science, in tandem with a second paper on the nature of gamma-ray bursts. That second paper revealed that data from the Swift and Fermi satellites support theories that the bursts are powered by cataclysmic stellar events leading up the formation of a black hole.

Police document photographed reveals Julian Assange tactics

The briefing paper, captured by an eagle-eyed photographer as an official carried it in his hand, lays out the major difficulty the WikiLeaks founder faces, even though he's received diplomatic asylum.

"Assange?to be arrested under all circumstances," the hand-written note says.

The briefing paper, captured by an eagle-eyed photographer as an official carried it in his hand, lays out the major difficulty the WikiLeaks founder faces, even though he's received diplomatic asylum. He's safe as long as he remains in the embassy. The minute he steps outside, he faces immediate arrest ? and speedy extradition to Sweden ? over sex crimes allegations leveled against him there.

It's a standoff that has the potential to drag on for weeks, months, or even years, and it's one that has pitted the United Kingdom ? which has warned it could revoke the embassy's status if diplomats continue to shelter the Australian computer expert ? against the small Andean nation of Ecuador and many of its left-leaning Latin American allies.

The world's media have followed every move in the increasing convoluted WikiLeaks saga ? which has elements of journalistic intrigue, conspiracy theory, legal wrangling, and international diplomacy.

The latter got the most play Friday, with the Ecuadoreans saying that several South American diplomats had visited the embassy in solidarity with Ecuador's stand against Britain's warning.

Argentina, which fought a brief war with Britain in 1982 over the Falkland Islands ? also known as the Malvinas ? took the opportunity to scold London for the move, which it described as a "violation of international law."

"This action shows the arrogance of British diplomacy," the Argentinian Embassy said in a statement. "It doesn*t come as a surprise for Argentinians, as it is similar to the British statements on the Malvinas Question, in which the U.K. has also disregarded international law."

Britain's Foreign Office said earlier that it had delivered a letter to Ecuador's Embassy ? but declined to say what was in it. Neither side shows any sign of budging any time soon.

Venture Capital Firms Trim Their Wings - Strategy & Business

Title:?Investment Risk Allocation and the Venture Capital Exit Market
Authors:?Susan Chaplinsky (University of Virginia) and Swasti Gupta-Mukherjee (Loyola University Chicago)
Publisher:?Social Science Research Network Working Paper Series
Date Published: March 2012

Observers were transfixed recently by the mountains of money generated by Facebook?s initial public?offering (IPO), flawed as it was. But such a rich outcome belies the tougher odds that startups now face. Since 2001, venture capital (VC) firms in the United States have been less willing to invest in the earliest stages of the startup process, this paper finds. The shift has reduced VCs? risk, but also their upside potential. Additionally, it means that there?s less capital flowing to startups when they need it most. Indeed, the decrease in early investment may be slowing the pace of innovation.

The researchers analyzed all U.S. companies with VC investments that resulted in IPOs; mergers, acquisitions, or buyouts (so-called M&A exits); or failures and write-offs, combining several databases. They computed the returns from 1,436 IPOs; 1,222 M&A deals; and 3,518 failures from 1986 through 2008, measuring VC firms? risk allocation by the proportion of funding provided to early-stage and first-round investments.

The proportion of IPOs fell sharply, from almost 75 percent?of the total outcomes between?1986 and 1997 to 37 percent after the dot-com bubble burst, from 2001 to 2008. Meanwhile, M&A exits soared to 63 percent, from 25 percent, during the same periods.

That shift is important because IPOs had substantially better returns on investment than M&A deals did. The VCs doubled their money with IPOs, which produced an average return of 211.7 percent; with M&A deals, they barely broke even (the average return was 99.5 percent).

?IPOs more frequently generate the extremely high returns that help lift overall VC performance and cover losses from failures,? the authors write. In contrast, the rise of M&A exits ?forces increased consideration of downside risk in VCs? evaluation of investments.?

M&A deals could be increasing because companies have been more reluctant to go public since the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act in 2002. Some analysts also argue that many of the industries that were?nascent in the mid-1990s have matured, offering less growth potential.

The venture capitalists themselves became more conservative after 2001, likely because of the more uncertain exit market and their own increased difficulties in securing capital. In cutting back early-stage investments, the authors say, the VCs ?appear to have moved away from ?swinging for the fences? and...toward ?batting for average.??

Bottom Line: Over the past decade, venture capitalists have cut down on riskier investments, significantly lowering their potential returns and diminishing their role in early-stage innovation.?

DEARBORN, Mich., Aug. 24, 2012 ? Ford's new Explorer Sport will stand in a class of one when it goes on sale next month with an EPA-certified 22 mpg highway rating, the only seven-passenger, high-performance SUV on the market to do so.

New for the 2013 model year, Ford Explorer Sport arrives, packing a 365 horsepower EcoBoost? engine, high-fashion interior design and class-leading fuel economy.

"Explorer Sport hits a sweet-spot combination of power, usable torque, 4WD capability, with class-leading fuel efficiency," said Bill Gubing, chief engineer for Explorer, Taurus and Police Interceptor vehicles. "The Explorer Sport EcoBoost engine matches Taurus SHO for output and the Terrain Management System has been specifically calibrated to optimize increased power ? regardless of the road or conditions."

Explorer Sport mixes high-performance SUV power with fuel economy of up to 16 mpg in city driving and 22 mpg on the highway. This is 3 mpg better in the city and 2 mpg better on the highway than the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango R/T with 5.7-liter Hemi engines.

Explorer Sport scores 3 mpg higher in the city and 4 mpg higher on the highway than the supercharged Land Rover Range Rover Sport.

No compromises

"Explorer Sport is an uncompromised high-performance SUV," said Gubing. "From making changes to the chassis and suspension, uniquely calibrating the Terrain Management System for added power, we're delivering an SUV that delivers great dynamics and performance ? while towing up to 5,000 pounds."

The Explorer Sport features a paddle-shifted six-speed SelectShift Automatic? transmission with a unique 3.16 to 1 final drive ratio to provide the balance of responsive acceleration and economical low-rpm cruising for better highway fuel efficiency.

Ford engineers also added chassis tunnel reinforcements and a solid-mounted electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) rack with improved pedal feel and response for drivers, both on-road and off.
This model comes standard with larger brakes for improved pedal feel, stronger resistance to fade and better performance while towing.

Explorer Sport also has received special Terrain Management System settings for optimizing increased power and torque in on-road touring and under sandy, snowy, rutted mud and hill descent conditions. These changes enable a luxurious ride for driving enthusiasts, without the harshness or thirst for fuel of performance-intended competitors.

Development engineers validated snow settings in Michigan's Upper Peninsula and returned to Borrego Springs, Calif. to fine-tune sand settings.

Sport-specific calibration optimizes increased EcoBoost power and consistent torque to specific conditions such as deep sand or snow, at the setting of a console-mounted knob.

Design elements

The 2013 Sport builds on Explorer's muscular, sculpted form with subtle cues to differentiate it from other models in the lineup.

Available in four exterior colors ? Ruby Red Metallic Clearcoat, White Platinum Metallic Tri-Coat, Tuxedo Black Metallic and Ingot Silver Metallic ? Explorer Sport has unique 20-inch painted and machined wheels, features blacked-out headlamp and taillamp treatments, black roof rack rails, sideview mirror skull caps and a liftgate appliqu?.

The Explorer Sport's special grille is a low-gloss Sterling Gray mesh, with contrasting ebony high-gloss bars.

The black front lower fascia features a functional opening for additional cooling. Explorer logotype in billet-like black adds a bold identity statement.

Inside, the high-end feel continues. Charcoal Black leather-trimmed seating is available with and without contrasting Sienna inserts.

The interior design contrast was inspired by fashion, mirroring two-tones that are currently seen in leather accessories and apparel from design houses Balenciaga and Prada. Stitching is emphasized to lend a handcrafted appearance while highlighting Explorer Sport's sculptured seats.

Explorer Sport also has unique steering wheel stitching, a technical look to instrument and door panel appliqu?s, unique Sport-logo floor mats and illuminated scuff plates.
