India abuzz about mystery woman at Olympics

By The Associated Press

A mysterious woman in red has caused an international incident at the London Olympics.

Indian officials are mystified ? and miffed ? after an unknown young woman managed to march with the country's athletes and officials during the opening ceremony Friday night.

Games organizers on Sunday downplayed security concerns around the unscripted moment, saying the interloper was a ceremony cast member and had been screened before entering the Olympic Park.

Images from Friday's ceremony showed a young woman in turquoise jeans and a red jacket marching alongside Indian flag bearer Sushil Kumar at the head of the delegation of 40 athletes in bright yellow and navy blue.

"We are totally dazed," Indian press attach? Harpal Singh Bedi said. "How can a person without any accreditation walk past?"

Indian officials said they had no idea who the woman was. Indian media identified her as Madhura Nagendra, a graduate student from Bangalore who had been living in London.

Her father, K. Nagendra, was quoted by the Press Trust of India news agency as saying that his daughter had been chosen to dance in director Danny Boyle's ceremony, and he speculated that she might have been asked by organizers to escort India's team into the stadium.

Bedi said India's acting chef de mission, P.K.M. Raja, had sent games organizers an official letter of complaint.

London organizing chief Sebastian Coe insisted the woman had not posed a threat to the ceremony. He told reporters she was "a cast member who clearly got slightly overexcited."

Sonera blocks Pirate Bay website in Finland

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Internet service provider Sonera, the Finnish subsidiary of TeliSonera, said on Monday it had blocked customers' access to The Pirate Bay, an online service popular for illegal downloading of films and music, to comply with a Helsinki court order.

Sonera said it would challenge the court's decision, saying that barring services was not an effective way to reduce piracy.

The recording industry took The Pirate Bay to court in Helsinki last year for allowing copyright infringement. Elisa, one of the largest telecoms operators in Finland, blocked access to the website earlier this year following a court order.

Kline Worries About Military Contractors, Ignores Impact on ...

John Kline (R-MN-02), the Chairman of the Education and Workforce Committee, voted for the Budget Control Act setting in motion for Congress to take the responsibility to put forward a fair, balanced and responsible fiscal plan.
In order to force a decision, the legislation created automatic budget cuts if there is not agreement on a long-term plan by the end of this year.
If an agreement is not reached to reduce the long-term budget deficit by $1.2 trillion, automatic budget cuts are set to take effect starting in January ? $109 billion in federal spending cuts split evenly between defense spending and domestic programs.

According to MPR reporting, Chairman Kline is ?worried that the automatic budget cuts could devastate the economy by throwing thousands of defense contractors out of work.?

Great ? so Chairman Kline confirms the obvious ? his focus is on serving those that mean the most to his party managers ? but for Minnesotans, it is his failure to address the impact of the domestic cuts is troubling.

Ignoring the problem will not make it go away, but that is what Chairman Kline is apparently doing.
This week the Education and Workforce Committee does not have any hearings scheduled ? although members have requested a hearing, writing :

As you know, if Congress doesn?t chart a different fiscal path, federal programs will see cuts of approximately 8 percent at a time when out economy needs federal support, not abandonment.
Much has been said of the impact of sequestration on civilian and military jobs in the defense industry, but as Acting Director of the Office of Management and Budget Jeffrey Zeings has pointed out, ?less attention has been paid to its equally harsh effects on domestic programs.?

Educational programs, for example, sit squarely within those crosshairs. Those programs not only aim to give all children an equal opportunity to succeed. They also are critical to the long-term strength of our economy. Earlier this year, the Council on Foreign Relations released a report entitled, ?U.S. Education Reform and National Security.? The report found that failures in America?s education system poses threats to national security, including to economic growth and competitiveness.

The letter lists some potential impacts including job losses and program cuts, and concludes ?To avoid the fiscal cliff, choices will have to be made. The states are high for workers, families and children.?

So, a ?fiscal cliff? is approaching ? and Chairman Kline is taking a week off ? well actually, the month off ? as Majority Leader Eric Cantor has scheduled the House to be on recess from August 4th through September 9th.

So what is the impact to Minnesota if no action is taken ?

After all, a laid-off teacher is just as unemployed as a laid-off defense contractor ? except the teacher?s job will have an immediate impact ? as America does not have stockpile of ?education weapons? if attacked.

One program that Chairman Kline has vocally supported is Federal funding for IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) to help States and local communities meet the excess costs of providing special education and related services to children with disabilities.
States are required to provide a free and appropriate public education to students with disabilities. In 1975, the Federal Government committed to pay 40 percent of such costs, but now provides only 16.3 percent. President Obama?s FY2013 request for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act funding was essentially level funding while Chairman Kline wanted to increase it to 17% but that may not happen. Minnesota under the sequestration concept would lose $14,545,082 ? and decreased Federal revenue means that State and local revenue will need to cover required costs.

Lindsay Jones, senior director of policy and advocacy services at the Council for Exceptional Children is concerned, ?School districts around the nation have seen deep cuts in funding over the last few years as our nation confronts a recession, increased needs, and declining revenues. These cuts have impacted districts? ability to provide services to children in need?further cuts won?t help.?

Chairman Kline?s knows that already ? after all, it?s the same concern expressed by Chairman Kline just last year ?

?I have heard too many stories from schools in Minnesota and across the nation who have been forced to choose between cutting bus routes, eliminating extracurricular activities, or increasing class sizes to meet this mandate while facing shrinking budgets. If the federal government paid what it promised, schools across America would be able to direct limited resources to address their specific needs ? whether it is state of the art classrooms, additional teachers, or new textbooks ? and make it possible for teachers and administrators to focus on the important job of providing the best education possible for all our children.?

But that is what will happen ? not only to Special Education but also to too many other programs.

According to information prepared by the Senate?s Appropriations Committee staff, Minnesota would be hit hard ? impacting Education programs, job creation programs, seniors, and low-income families.

Considered these programs and the dollars that Minnesota is projected to lose :

$214,000

Congress should debate the merits of these programs, determine where cuts should be made ? sadly, Chairman Kline is derelict in his responsibilities ? Chairman Kline is more concerned about the Armed Services Committee than his own Education and Workforce Committee ? and more concerned about appeasing his Party Managers and their benefactors than his Minnesota constituents.

If you see Chairman Kline throughout August (he might be out of the state fundraising), ask him why he isn?t in Washington being part of the solution.

Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge (CCSK)

With the rising adoption of cloud solutions, it is very important for organizations and enterprises to be sure that their IT department and the professionals they hire are competent with the key concepts of cloud services and its environment.? This is what the Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge is for.? But what is it really and how do you pursue it?? This article will give you all the details that you need to know regarding CCSK and how to obtain it.

What is Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge?

The Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge or CCSK is an online examination that measures your skills and know-how on important cloud security concerns.

So basically, the CCSK just proves that the IT professional is aware of the security risks in going cloud, as well as the best practices to observe when going for cloud security.

The CCSK exam can be accessed on an on-demand basis so there is no need to schedule.? The examination was created and hosted by the Cloud Security Alliance. ?It was launched in September 2010.

The CCSK is supported by cloud security experts and IT organizations all over the world.? Not only is it supported by Cloud Security Alliance, but it also has the backing of the European Network and Information Security Agency.? These are the two leading organizations that are involved in cloud security research worldwide.

The CCSK has 50 multiple-choice items and you would need to answer 40 of these correctly to obtain your certification.

It is important to note that you will need 60 minutes to finish the test and test takers are not allowed to pause the exam, so once you start, you should make sure that you will be able to finish the exam in one sitting. ?When the time runs out, you can no longer modify or add to your answers.

The CCSK costs $295 for an exam token.? In the event that you fail the examination, you will have two more chances to pass using the same exam token.

The CCSK certification is valid forever, but if there are changes, you might want to upgrade your certification.? The CSA allows you to take a new version of the exam when it becomes available.

Why it matters

The CSA is very upfront in saying that CCSK is not an alternative for other information technology security certifications, which are focused on a particular skill or job function. ?But it can still be rather important, especially for someone looking to establish a career in IT.? The CCSK is still a good way to measure an IT professional?s competency in the best practices of cloud security.? The CCSK is also a good add-on for other certification programs such as the Certified Information Systems Security Professional, Certified Secure Software Lifecycle Professional, and Certified Authorization Professional, among others.

Who should pursue CCSK?

While geared towards security professionals, the CCSK should be recommended for a wide array of IT professionals.? This is because it covers a broad array of topics from governance to architecture, compliance to data security.? There are really no requisites that you need to fulfill if you want to pursue a CCSK certification.? There are training courses that can help you prepare, but these are not required.

How to pass the CCSK

You might think that the CCSK is easy.? Think again. According to Jim Reavis at the Dark Reading Blog, the passing rate for CCSK as of August 2011 is only 53%.? Yes, close to half of those who take the test fail. ??Fortunately, there are some things that you should know about the CCSK in order to help you pass:

1. Scope. The certification exam aims to measure your skills in these domains:

  • Application Security
  • Cloud Architecture
  • Compliance and Audit
  • Data Center Operations
  • Encryption and Key Management
  • Governance and Enterprise Risk
  • Identity and Access Management
  • Incident Response
  • Information Lifecycle Management
  • Legal and Electronic Discovery
  • Portability and Interoperability
  • Traditional Security, BCM, D/R
  • Virtualization

2. The exam questions. The content of the exam comes from three different sources: CSA Guidance, ENISA and the CCSK Study Guide.

The CSA Guidance is a set of top practices for cloud operations and its latest version is available online.? Seven out of 10 questions will come from the CSA Guidance.enisa logo

ENISA stands for European Network and Information Security Agency, and 20% of the questions on the CCSK come from their Cloud Computing Risk Assessment document.

The CSA also provides you with a study guide that incorporates the concepts and best practices set out in both the ENISA and CSA Guidance documents.? The remaining 10 percent of the questions would come from the Cloud Security Alliance study guide.

3.Official training courses. The Cloud Security Alliance has two official training courses for those who want to be better prepared for the CCSK.

The CCSK Basic is a one-day comprehensive review of the basic concepts of cloud security. ?You can get a comprehensive account of cloud computing, as well as the different domains as laid out by the CSA Guidance and the ENISA framework.? The Basic module costs $695, but you are already provided with an exam token with the purchase.

The CCSK Plus, on the other hand, contains expanded materials and a lot of practical activities.? This module costs $1195 and comes with a free exam token.

There are also some books and materials that could help you in preparing for the exam.? For those who are looking for CCSK help for less than $50, check out the following books:

Like most certification programs, the Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge should not be used as a shortcut to experience. You must have the requisite experience to make the certification meaningful.? Experience, review and training could help you secure a CCSK certification easily and quickly.

Police: Man charged in 3 slayings says he erred

This undated photo provided by the Pennsylvania State Police shows Kevin Cleeves. Trooper Adam Reed says an Amber Alert was canceled Saturday, July 28, 2012, after police in Austintown, Ohio, apprehended 35-year-old Cleeves, who was traveling with his missing daughter, Leia. (AP Photo/Pennsylvania State Police)

(AP) ? Hours after authorities began investigating the shooting deaths of three people in a central Pennsylvania home, the man later charged in the case admitted to state police that he'd "messed up."

The suspect, Kevin Cleeves of Waynesboro, said that in retrospect he never should have gone to the home of his estranged wife's boyfriend Friday night, even if he was concerned about the welfare of his 4-year-old daughter.

Because there, authorities alleged, he quarreled with his wife and her boyfriend in front of the girl and was told to leave but instead opened fire, shooting to death the two adults as well as the man's mother. He then fled with the girl 250 miles to neighboring Ohio, where he was arrested and his daughter was recovered safely.

Cleeves was charged with three counts of criminal homicide in the deaths of 25-year-old Brandi Cleeves, 28-year-old Vincent Santucci and 55-year-old Rosemary Holma and was awaiting an extradition hearing Monday. Court records listed no attorney for him.

Detectives in Ohio declined to say where his daughter, Leia, was on Sunday.

Kevin Cleeves, 35, was headed for Michigan in hopes of getting the girl to his aunt's house, according to an affidavit filed in court in Pennsylvania.

He called his aunt about an hour after the slayings, and he was "drinking and mad," she told police. He admitted to her that he was behind the shootings and she called police.

Cleeves got as far as Austintown, Ohio, just over the Pennsylvania state line, where he was arrested in a hotel parking lot.

Santucci's father, Vincent L. Santucci Sr., told The Herald-Mail of Hagerstown, Md., that that his son, a chef, had only known Brandi Cleeves for little more than a month but they had a positive energy between them.

"He was a kind person, loving son and brother," he said.

Santucci Sr. said his former wife was a wonderful mother who had put herself through nursing school and found her calling as a nurse.

"We think she died running to help her son," he said.

U.S. Solar Industry Praises Rep. Bilbray?s Efforts to Promote Renewable Energy

Bilbray votes to maintain Dept. of Energy loan guarantee program.

Washington, DC (PRWEB) July 27, 2012

The Solar Energy Industries Association? (SEIA?), the national trade association for the U.S. solar industry, today praised U.S. Representative Brian Bilbray (R-50th,CA ) for his support of solar energy in a key panel vote. Congressman Bilbray voted against legislation that would eliminate the successful Department of Energy (DOE) Loan Guarantee Program.

?The solar industry sincerely appreciates Congressman Bilbray?s vote to maintain the Loan Guarantee Program,? said Rhone Resch, SEIA President and CEO. ?In this political environment, it takes true vision and courage to ignore politics and take a principled, fact-based stand in support of renewable energy. We appreciate his leadership on this issue.?

On July 25, 2012, the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Energy and Power considered the ?No More Solyndras Act.? The legislation, as ultimately approved by the subcommittee, goes far beyond implementing safeguards to improve the DOE Loan Guarantee Program and instead, would eliminate the program. This short-sighted, politically expedient approach to the issue would significantly hinder the development of utility-scale renewable energy projects in America.

The DOE Loan Guarantee Program has spurred the development of 11 utility-scale solar energy projects that support thousands of construction jobs and will produce enough clean energy to power more than 630,000 homes. These projects all have existing contracts with utilities to purchase the power they generate, which provides a guaranteed revenue stream that minimizes financial risk to taxpayers. The program?s structure provides a net positive return to taxpayers and leverages private sector capital to finance vital renewable infrastructure projects.

?America?s solar industry thanks Congressman Bilbray for his long-standing and steadfast support of solar energy and the policies that will help our nation realize the significant economic and energy security benefits associated with the expanded deployment and use of solar energy,? added Resch.

The bill, passed 14-6 by the subcommittee, is expected to move to a full-committee mark-up early as next week, before the August Congressional recess.

The U.S. solar industry employs 100,000 Americans at more than 5,600 companies, mostly small businesses, across the nation in all 50 states.

About SEIA:

Established in 1974, the Solar Energy Industries Association is the national trade association of the U.S. solar energy industry. Through advocacy and education, SEIA is building a strong solar industry to power America. As the voice of the industry, SEIA works with its 1,100 member companies to make solar a mainstream and significant energy source by expanding markets, removing market barriers strengthening the industry and educating the public on the benefits of solar energy. http://www.seia.org.

A potential new weight-loss drug created by scientists may help people shed pounds and keep them off, researchers say.

In the study, obese mice treated with the drug ate less, lost weight and experienced improved metabolic health, such as reduced insulin resistance, compared with obese mice not given the drug.

The drug appears to work by increasing the body's sensitivity to leptin, a hormone that suppresses appetite. It's thought that obese people become desensitized to leptin, meaning their bodies do not respond to it.

"By sensitizing the body to naturally occurring leptin, the new drug could not only promote weight loss, but also help maintain it," said study researcher George Kunos, of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

Because the study was conducted in mice, it's not clear whether the effects will translate to people. The researchers plan to start tests of the drug in people if it passes a safety test required by the National Institutes of Health, Kunos said.

New drug, tried method

Because obese people become desensitized to leptin, simply giving people supplements of the hormone does not promote weight loss, studies have shown. The desensitization process is thought to involve cannabinoid receptors ? the same receptors that are activated by chemicals in marijuana.

Activating cannabinoid receptors is known to promote feelings of hunger in marijuana smokers, and blocking these receptors has been shown to cause weight loss. However, a previously developed weight- loss drug, called rimonabant, that blocked cannabinoid receptors also caused serious psychiatric side effects, including anxiety and depression. Rimonabant was sold in Europe beginning in 2006, but was taken off the market a few years later.

The drug tested in the new study, called JD5037, was designed to not enter the brain as a way to reduce psychiatric side effects. The drug blocks cannabinoid receptors in other parts of the body, including the liver and muscle, Kunos said.

Obese mice given JD5037 daily for about a month lost 28 percent of their body weight, and reached the weight of a normal-size mouse, Kunos said. Moreover, the mice lost the weight while continuing to eat the high-fat diet that led to their obesity in the first place. The mice appeared to lose most of the weight in the first two weeks, and maintained it after that.

The mice showed no signs of psychiatric side effects.

Another weight-loss drug?

Although our appetites are controlled by our brains, the new drug does not need to get inside the brain to do its work, Kunos said. Instead, the drug reduces leptin levels by inhibiting leptin production by fat cells and increasing the clearance of leptin, which in turn, makes the body more sensitive to the hormone, Kunos said.

Two weight-loss drugs, Belviq and Qsymia, were recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration. But because of the vastness of the obesity epidemic, medications that act in different ways are badly needed to help the problem, Kunos said.

Before Qsymia, which was previously called Qnexa, was approved, there had been concerns about the drug's side effects, including its potential to cause a fast heart rate.

Belviq may also cause serious side effects, including serotonin syndrome, a potentially life-threatening drug reaction that causes the body to have too much serotonin, a chemical produced by nerve cells, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Pass it on: A new drug causes weight loss in mice, but studies in people are needed.

Weaker demand pressures Dow Chemical 2Q

Dow Chemical CEO Andrew N. Liveris has a pretty bleak assessment of the world's economy, predicting that it could take until 2014 for growth to return to a normal pace.

Liveris said Thursday that deteriorating global business conditions caused a 34 percent drop in Dow Chemical's second-quarter net income. And he doesn't expect to see much improvement for the rest of this year.

"The new reality is that this world is not in a normal growth mode," he told analysts on a conference call. "And it does not appear that we will see this for at least 12 to 24 months."

A quarterly profit of 55 cents per share missed estimates and shares in the nation's largest chemicals maker fell 3.7 percent in afternoon trading. Liveris said volumes fell in most categories as demand dropped because of a "synchronized global economic slowdown." Customers were cautious about purchases because of uncertainty about where global growth is headed.

The Midland, Mich., manufacturer has a broad reach across industries and geographic regions, selling materials used in everything from televisions and paint to construction and agricultural products.

Since the end of the first quarter, economies have slowed in the U.S. and China. Some European countries have fallen into recession as the massive debt crisis there drags on. Manufacturing has declined in all three regions.

For the April-through-June quarter, Dow Chemical's earnings fell to $649 million. A year earlier, Dow earned $982 million, or 84 cents per share. Revenue dropped 10 percent to $14.51 billion. That's the company's first decline in revenue since the third quarter of 2009.

Analysts polled by FactSet forecast earnings of 64 cents per share and revenue of $15.69 billion.

Sales fell for materials used in electronics, energy, coatings and infrastructure. Sales also fell for performance materials, like polyurethane and epoxy. Performance plastic volumes rose but sales dropped because of a 9 percent decrease in prices.

One bright spot was agricultural products where sales rose 12 percent to a second-quarter record of $1.7 billion.

Overall, prices fell 5 percent, declining in all geographic regions. The biggest drop ? 8 percent ? was in Europe.

To contend with these conditions, Dow Chemical will ramp up its efforts to cut costs and reduce capital expenditures. Liveris said that the company will extend the time expected for it to reach near-term earnings targets but still expects to hit those targets.

Shares of Dow Chemical fell $1.12, or 3.7 percent, to $29.15 in afternoon trading. Its shares have risen 41 percent since hitting a 52-week low of $20.61 in October but are still short of their high of $36.32 late last July.

profit hub - The web is filled with websites promising to cause you to a millionaire in under 15 minutes. So think for a couple of minutes, should you could really invest USD50 within an e-book that can make that you simply millionaire in Quarter-hour, would the e-book really cost USD50?

Even if the e-book did cost USD50 big event that right now you'll have met anyone who has actually made millions after buying a USD50 e-book? Quickly, off of the top of your head, consider 3 people you're friends with or have met online who're millionaires, and possess made their funds after buying an e-book online.

I am just not disputing the fact that you can actually generate income, no doubt you may make many of it, however the internet may be considered a make money fast market that with hardly any effort and minimum investment could make you excessively rich and you also never need to work again. Yeah right!

Think again, earning money on the internet is as hard or even harder that producing a full time income in real life. Now while your financial investment on the net might be substantially less that the traditional brick and mortar investment, it is not free.

Your time and energy purchase of an internet business will most likely far outweigh enough time you would put into a brick and mortar business. Your customers never sleep, business doesn't close at 5, and there are no rules as to which geographical area you have to be employed in.

Business energy online is relative to the time which you put into a web business. Your time and efforts don't just one single day end. You never wake up one morning and think to yourself "I think I'll stop working today" and your business will continue to function.

profit hub - While running an internet business and from your home does allow you certain luxuries, you've still got to be effective. Some of the most successful online entrepreneurs work every day, and quite often still post for their forums, and send their news letters while you're on holiday.

The idea I'm trying to make is that having a successful online business requires you to work on it. For instance, Google's Adsense program is among the most successful advertising programs on the internet, and if you obtain 1000 visitors on your own site/s a day this will let you 10% CTR the you are receiving 100 clicks at an average of USD1 you're making USD100 per day. That works yes, but exactly how do you get 1000 visitors per day? You don't think it's as elementary as creating a website on the weekend and retiring per month later?

Many individuals on the web would have us believe that, in support of once we have parted with your money and bought an entire library of e-book and also have a great variety of software do we realise that we can't give up our day jobs as of this time.

I have bought every e-book available, I've read them all, they've great sales copy along with a very enticing sales hype, but after the day they simply inform you of a distinct segment which you can use to build revenue.

profithub.com - You still have to put in the time. But that often we put in the amount of time in a bad place; we spend way too much time doing a bad thing. So how do you know you do the right thing? Well, here are a few guidelines...

You can find only a few select areas that can make your website work:

1. Be sure you hold the right product: Don't try and head to market having a product that that you simply) don't know backwards, and b) can be a shot in the dark. Do your homework, ensure that there exists a marketplace for whatever products or services you are planning to offer, Google all you can, find every forum that pertains to your product and read, read, read.

2. Make your business: Setup your website, utilizing a developer, templates, Cms etc, and make sure it's 100% Before you go live. There's nothing more off putting when compared to a site that wants USD97 for and e-book, but the site looks like a dog's breakfast. Make sure you use a professional looking site, and test, test, test.

3. Optimize your internet site: Here is the most time-consuming process, either pay you to definitely take action to suit your needs properly if you don't have the time, or ensure you still do it. The last thing you want or need is being blacklisted from search engines. Get good links, research key phrases, do proper onpage and off-page optimization.

4. Post sales selling: After you have customer, ensure that you stay in touch using them. Setup a forum to discuss using your product, and answer any queries they may have, forums are great for interaction with your clients at once.

Be sure that your time is primarily allocated to these areas. They're going to have the highest return and enable you to become a success on the net, and don't forget, it won't happen overnight.

Satellites reveal sudden ice melt

The surface of Greenland's massive ice sheet has melted this month over an unusually large area, Nasa has said.

Scientists said the "unprecedented" melting took place over a larger area than has been detected in three decades of satellite observation.

Melting even occurred at Greenland's coldest and highest place, Summit station.

The thawed ice area jumped from 40% of the ice sheet to 97% in just four days from 8 July.

?Start Quote

Melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time?

End Quote Lora Koenig Nasa Goddard Space Flight Center

Although about half of Greenland's ice sheet normally sees surface melting over the summer months, the speed and scale of this year's thaw surprised scientists, who described the phenomenon as "extraordinary".

Nasa said that nearly the entire ice cover of Greenland, from its thin, low-lying coastal edges to its centre, which is 3km (two miles) thick, experienced some degree of melting at its surface.

Until now, the most extensive melting seen by satellites in the past three decades was about 55% of the area.

According to ice core records, such pronounced melting at Summit station and across the ice sheet has not occurred since 1889.

"When we see melt in places that we haven't seen before, at least in a long period of time, it makes you sit up and ask what's happening," Nasa chief scientist Waleed Abdalati said.

"It's a big signal, the meaning of which we're going to sort out for years to come."

Watch this space

He said that, because this Greenland-wide melting has happened before - in 1889 - scientists are not yet able to determine whether this is a natural but rare event, or if it has been sparked by man-made climate change.

"Ice cores from Summit show that melting events of this type occur about once every 150 years on average. With the last one happening in 1889, this event is right on time," said Lora Koenig, a glaciologist from Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland and a member of the research team analysing the satellite data.

"But if we continue to observe melting events like this in upcoming years, it will be worrisome."

Scientists said they believed that much of Greenland's ice was already freezing again.

The news comes just days after Nasa satellite imagery revealed that a massive iceberg, twice the size of Manhattan, had broken off a glacier in Greenland.

"This event, combined with other natural but uncommon phenomena, such as the large calving event last week on Petermann Glacier, are part of a complex story," said Nasa's Tom Wagner.

20 Timeless Tips to Increase Productivity in Your Design Business ...

I?ve taken time to write down 20 of the most effective ways I?ve found useful in keeping productivity at a sustainable level and personal sanity at as high as possible (muy importante). There?s quite a bit of material here, so bookmark this page and feel free to reference it as much as you need.

Here we go!

  1. Task Blocks & Prioritization

  1. Chunk your day into 1-3 hour task-oriented time blocks. I cannot tell you how great this approach is. Well, yes, I can. Blocking out my days has helped me be 200% more productive this year than last year (yes, I?ve been keeping track). That?s pretty major!
  2. Keep times specific and focused. When you sit down to create the time blocks, make sure the task is clearly defined and not a general ?work on project x.? I like to drill down into my tasks / projects and write out specific steps to completion. Some projects aren?t not as easily defined, i.e. initial concepts for design work. For those items, I try to break up the research portion, sketches and wireframes, then move to Photoshop or InDesign to flush out what?s in my head.
  3. During these times, do not answer your phone (unless making/taking a phone call is the task).
  4. Stay off of time-sucking websites like Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc. If you do not trust yourself, there are services available to block you from specified websites for specified periods of time. This is genius for those of us who have SOS (Shiny Object Syndrome). Here?s a great article with several resources.
  5. When you think of something else that needs to get done, write it down and forget about it until the task at hand is complete.
  6. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT check your email! Checking email will be the death of your productivity. Only refer to emails that pertain to your task. OR, better yet, take notes from those emails and then close your email for the duration of the task time block.
  7. Prioritize 2-3 tasks per day. TOTAL. No more. Ever. I?m not kidding. Brains can only handle so much. They are awesome and can be super efficient but only if we keep them from being overload. If you prioritize and only set out to accomplish 2-3 tasks instead of the usual 10, you will be so much more effective and productive. It seems counter intuitive, but it works.

    Batch Tasks (daily, weekly, monthly)

Using your task blocks, do things in bulk.

  8. Daily: Check email only once per day. I set aside 30 min ? 1 hr each day for email. During this time I respond to emails and send necessary updates to clients. Sometimes I use a service for Google Apps called Boomerang (available for Gmail to). It allows you to do two things: 1. Send emails at a later time ? this helps avoid the back and forth; 2. Notify you if they have not responded within a certain amount of time. This helps keep myself and my clients on-task and on-time.
  9. Weekly: Batch attack your social media (if you?re into that sort of thing). I sit down once a week for an hour or two and come up with content for 2 weeks of social media posts. I use a similar approach for blogging. For each of these tasks, I use Hootsuite.com and the scheduling feature within my WordPress site.
  10. Monthly:?Get your books up to date once per month. Keep this as a priority over all things (even paid work). This is important! You gots to invoice and you gots to track your cash money.

    Healthy Amounts of Work

Here?s one that 99% of my awesome designer friends suck at?keep a regular, non-crazy schedule.

  11. Do not over commit. Sometimes, this means turning work away or telling people you are booked up for the next 2-4 weeks. That?s okay! This will show people you are in demand and willing to create (and stick to) boundaries.
  12. Be reasonable in your timelines and pad them.
  13. No more crazy long days. Those 12 hour days will kill your creativity and possibly any promise of a healthy life outside of work. Limit yourself on how many hours you work per day. Personally, I cannot be doing intense conceptual work for more than 3-4 hours, max. I have to switch gears and work on tasks that are less right-brain taxing.
  14. Save weekends for fun, not more work. Time away from your work will help your mind to focus on other things and therefore, be more creative in problem solving. Minds and bodies need rest.

    Exercise

I?m not going to tell you to start running every day, so please, bear with me.

  15. Find something active (i.e. something that gets you out of the office chair and gets your heart rate up) that you enjoy doing. Incorporate it into your week. This could be as simple as walking or as adventurous as unicycling. Exercise helps me clear my head, keeps my aches and pains at bay. It also seems to stimulate the creative part of my brain.

    Make Time for Food

    Don?t forget the bacon!

  16. When my energy is down, my creativity and my ability to be productive goes out the window. I?ve learned to set timers for my tasks and, literally, schedule when I am going to each lunch each day. Sometimes I will bring snacks into my office if I know I?m going to need the time during lunch to finish a project. I don?t recommend making a habit of this but nonetheless, you must eat!
Quality Time with [fill in the blank].

Getting in a little socialization throughout the week does a designer good. I often have a lot of thoughts swirling around in my head and it helps to talk it out.

  17. Family Meeting. My husband and I have Family Meeting once a week for 2-3 hours. This covers the obvious scheduling and budgeting topics but we also touch base on side projects and business stuff too.
  18. Best friend ?Walk About, Talk About.? Another person I intentionally connect with is my best friend. She lives across the state so in leu of face to face time, we walk our dogs and talk on the phone for 45 minutes. Again, sharing ideas and catching up.
  19. Get a group of like-minded people together on a regular basis. I?ve started meeting once a week with a group of other local designers. It?s starting out small (there are 3-4 of us that attend regularly), but I know it will grow. There are really great things that come out of this type of gathering. Great side projects, collaboration, support, and, in our case, a co-working space. We?re working on finding a place to rent at the moment, but I am really excited about working side-by-side with other designers in a cool space. More to come on this later.
    Peaceful Start to Your Day

Rather than waking up and checking your email while you sip your coffee, start out with something quite and inspirational. Skip the overwhelming inbox.

  20. In the early morning, after coffee but before I officially sit down at my desk, I read. Sometimes I read fantastically inspirational books like The $100 Startup (totally recommend). Other times, I catch up on the blogs I subscribe to, which mostly focus on business and design. I find this time in the morning to be peaceful, invigorating and inspirational.

Making major changes in your day to day can be daunting, so make little changes over an extended period of time. Each week, take one or two of the above items that you find applicable and helpful and take it for a test drive for a couple weeks. There?s no need to change everything at once. I still struggle with these things too.

Somedays, these things just don?t happen, whether it?s a creativity block or low energy. I?ve learned it is better to just go with these and allow them to happen rather than feel guilty all day and not enjoy myself. Now and then, these are okay. When I get these days, I will go to the park with my dog, take a nap, or watch Hulu and Netflix. I have to work hard at not feeling guilty but it is important to remind yourself: this is your f-ing business. You can do what you want.

It has taken me a couple months to get to the point where I regularly incorporate all of the items. I hope these prove to be helpful to you as they have been invaluable to my business? health and moreover, my personal well-being.

Moccasins Can Be The Best Footwear For Children

Children may be quite choosy regarding footwear. If a kid feels uncomfortable, he or she will just remove shoes suddenly. It is hard to please children especially in the process of buying shoes. This soft and hand-made footwear is something that practical customers have grown fond of and now make it a point to buy. These shoes and slippers are fashionable, hard-wearing and always a good fit.

Moccasins have been popular footwear both for youngsters and adults for many decades. You can check history books to verify this assertion. These shoes can be described as one of the finest varieties with its superior materials and exceptional designs. The fashion accessories come in unique styles and manufactured with soft soles. The sides are sewn in place to make it more durable.

More and more parents fancy the moccasin because of the comfort it provides the young wearer which cannot be found in other shoes. The velvety bottoms contain a layer of padding that supports the childs steps and prevents any unexpected injuries. It keeps the fragile feet fresh during summer and temperate in the winter. When the kids foot bends and moves, the sole moves with it and does not obstruct natural movements. Likewise, it provides instant protection against possible shocks and stumbling.

Fashion-conscious parents love these moccasins. There are several reasons parents love these shoes. One is the not only because of the exclusive designs and smart appearance. The other is the ease that it gives to the wearer. This kind of footwear can be used anytime and any day. Parents do not have to be troubled about their kids suffering from any discomfort or soreness. There is a wide array to choose from as well as attractive designs, and adorable colors. Even medical experts and health professionals have endorsed said shoes because of their elastic and soft soles.

You can always check out your favorite shopping malls, department stores and online suppliers for the moccasins of your choice. There are useful tips that you have to remember when shopping for shoes particularly for toddlers as well as young boys and girls. Make it a point to go for a fine or narrow sole which provides a complete hold and helps in the development of tender bones and muscles. Bear in mind that the footwear should never be too big or small because sizes that do not fit well can cause tenderness in the feet .

The soles should be porous since the feet of babies and kids are easily covered with sweat. The cardinal rule which has often been repeated is that shoes must be easy for mothers to put on but difficult for the tots to remove. Likewise, the shoes for babies and children must be light since heavy and may cause inconvenience or pain. Only the moccasin is capable of providing you with all these comfortable features. Buy a pair of brown-weathered moccasins for your boys and girls and you will see the satisfaction in the face of these youngsters.

No charge for teen who tweeted attackers' names

A Kentucky teenager frustrated by light punishment for two boys who pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting her was spared Monday from having to face a contempt charge for naming them on Twitter in violation of a court order.

The case of Savannah Dietrich, 17, quickly gathered supporters nationwide who were upset that the victim of an assault could be punished for speaking out against her attackers.

The girl turned to Twitter after she said she was frustrated with what she felt was a lenient plea deal. The judge had ordered no one to speak about the case, which was in juvenile court.

On Monday, attorneys for the boys dropped their motion to charge her with contempt. David Mejia, an attorney for one of the boys, said the decision to withdraw the motion had nothing to do with public sentiment and online attention to the case.

He said the purpose of the motion had been to enforce the law that protects juveniles and their actions from disclosure.

"The horse is out of the barn," he said. "Nothing is bringing it back."

The Associated Press does not generally identify victims of sexual assault, but Dietrich and her parents wanted her story to be made public. She gave her account to The Courier-Journal newspaper in a story published Saturday. She has not responded to the AP for comment and her lawyer, Emily Farrar-Crockett of the public defender's juvenile division, did not immediately return telephone calls.

Jeff Dion, deputy executive director of the National Center for Victims of Crime, said victims who feel cheated by the justice system sometimes file civil lawsuits in an effort to get information in the public, but social media has turned that on its head.

"It's all about giving victims a voice," Dion said.

In one day, an online petition on Change.org had garnered 62,000 signatures in support of Dietrich's action.

"When I read it, I was appalled and outraged and thought, 'Somebody has to do something about this. Who is going to do something about this?'" said Elizabeth Beier, 22, of Cockeysville, Md., who started the petition even though she doesn't know Deitrich. "Everyone wants this girl to have peace and time to recover and not another trauma like jail time."

Beier said the two women have not spoken, but she congratulated her.

"I think what she did was very brave by coming forward ... and I think a lot of people who may have been victims or survivors of assault and didn't get the justice they deserve probably see themselves in her," she said.

Terry O'Neill, president of the National Organization for Women, said the motion to withdraw the contempt of court charge was "a huge victory not only for Ms. Dietrich, but for women all over the country."

Deitrich told The Courier-Journal that after the sexual assault, the boys posted photos of the attack on the Internet.

"These boys shared the picture of her being raped with their friends and she can't share their names with her Twitter community? That's just crazy," O'Neill said.

The Courier-Journal reported that the boys were charged with first-degree sexual abuse, a felony, and misdemeanor voyeurism, according to information in a court motion the newspaper filed asking Judge Dee McDonald to allow the paper to see motions filed by attorneys for Dietrich.

The teens pleaded guilty to those charges in late June, though Dietrich and her family told the newspaper they were unaware of the plea bargain and recommended sentence until just before it was announced in court. The attack occurred in August 2011.

Dion said the Kentucky law on gag orders in juvenile cases presupposes that information revealed came from reading the court record. In Dietrich's case, he noted, she was the victim, and she had independent knowledge of the crime.

"And I think a restriction or gag order on a victim creates some First Amendment issues," Dion said.

He added that prosecuting a victim "sends a terrible message."

"We created victims' rights out of a recognition that we need victims to come forward in order for our justice system to work," he said. "Really, what do they get for that?"

Chris Klein, an attorney for one of the boys, said publicizing their names may create problems for them in the future.

"There's always that possibility and in any type of scenario like this you run that risk," he said. "Now whether both these boys can overcome those hurdles, it's too early to determine that."

Klein said it's possible, but unlikely, that prosecutors would make the same contempt charge against Dietrich. Both sides will still be bound by the confidentiality of the juvenile court proceedings.

"I think her behavior will dictate whether it's the end of it or not," Klein said. "If all the parties abide by the confidentiality of juvenile court, then I think that's the end of it."

Bill Patteson, a spokesman for the Jefferson County Attorney's office, said he could not comment because of the confidentiality on juvenile cases.

When properly groomed and taken care of long haired rabbits, like Angora?s, are gorgeous. The problem is keeping that hair combed, clean, and free of mats is pretty a chore. If a rabbit manager isn?t showing their very long haired rabbit, they typically trim the hair so that it is only one inches long. This help keep the actual rabbit?s coat clean and free from mats but also keeps the rabbit much more comfortable during the hot summer season. If you have by no means trimmed a rabbit?s very long hair before, you might want to consider your rabbit to an expert pet groomer and observe how it?s done when you try it yourself. When using the clippers or perhaps scissors, be very careful that you don?t damage the rabbits epidermis.

If you find an area where the rabbit?s hair has become so tangled that it has developed into mat, refrain from using a couple of scissors to remove the actual mat. It is better begin using a comb and patiently work the mat loose, a few hairs each time. If you find that this is to trying on the patience, you might want to look at your pet rabbit to your professional pet groomer and also have them remove the mats with some electric clippers.

Every few weeks, check and make sure your rabbit?s nails haven?t reached long. If you think there?re looking long, or notice that they are starting to catch with your carpeting it is time for you to trim them. If you have certainly not done this before take your rabbit with a pet groomer or veterinarian and watch how it is performed first. If you are comfortable alone be careful that you do not trim the nails so short them to bleed and your rabbit is usually to uncomfortable to move close to.

New research carried out by One Poll on behalf of British Gas reveals that over half (57%) of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) believe their energy suppliers use too much complex language which often stands in the way of the best deals.

The research also found that that a quarter of businesses (24%) say they spend too long dealing with their energy bills, contracts and pricing renewals because of the jargon used by suppliers.

In response, British Gas and the Plain English Campaign have launched ?Energy Made Simple? ? an industry-first online guide to help businesses better understand information about the energy they use to run their business.

It explains complex energy topics in easy-to-understand language and also offers advice and tips on how business can implement energy-saving measures to cut their bills.

According to the research, only a fifth (20%) of businesses are currently taking energy-saving measures, despite savings of up to 20% on offer for those that do.

Angela Needle, head of energy consultancy at British Gas Business, said: ?We know that our small business customers are short on time and want to feel confident they?re getting the best deal.

?But we recognise that as an industry we?ve not always helped them do this. By launching Energy Made Simple, we want to give any business, regardless of its supplier, the tools to quickly understand their energy contracts and how to manage their use effectively.?
